American Ornithologists' Union

The American Ornithologists' Union, founded in 1883, was already aware of the dangers facing many birds in the United States. There were however influential ornithologists who defended the collection of birds.

Birding in Tennessee

Birds in the US were threatened by hunting for sport as well as for the fashion industry. Pressure from shooting enthusiasts was intense. Great auks, for example, whose habit of crowding together on rocks and beaches made them especially easy to hunt, had been driven to extinction early in the century. During one week in the spring of 1897, nature author Florence Merriam claimed to have seen 2,600 robins for sale in one market stall in Washington alone. By the turn of the century, the sale of bird flesh was never greater. The second equally great threat to the bird population was the desire for their plumage. In the late 1890s the American Ornithologists' Union estimated that five million birds were killed annually for the fashion market. In the final quarter of the 19th century, plumes, and even whole birds, decorated the hair, hats, and dresses of women.

The Historic Trail of Tears

The Trail of Tears, named for the trail that was used as a pathway for the Indian displacement of thousands of American Indians--runs through the southern part of Monroe County, now known as Joe Brown Road.  The first piece of legislation that Andrew Jackson got passed once becoming President, was the Indian Removal Act of 1830--this Act empowered Jackson to forcibly remove all Indians living East of the Misissipi River.

The Cherokee Tribe chose to fight the eviction in a surprising way; instead of going on the warpath as their fathers and grand-fathers might have done, they took the illegal eviction all the way to the Supreme Court. In a historic decision, Chief Justice John Marshall ruled in favor of the Cherokees, ruling that they did not have to move.  Andrew Jackson thought differently--Jackson said, Marshall has made his ruling, now "let him enforce it". Andrew Jackson became the first U.S. President to defy a Supreme Court decision. The end result was that the Cherokees were rounded up at gunpoint, and forcibly removed from their land.

Trail Of Tears House Bill-One Step Closer to becoming Law

The Trail of Tears Documentation Act (H.R. 5335) calls for the inclusion of two primary westward trails-the Benge and Bell routes, as well as water routes thru the Tennessee and Arkansas Rivers and the so-called “round up routes” from Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama which the Cherokee were sought out, gathered and subsequently marched to numerous holding camps where the prisoners awaited their forced journey by foot, horseback, boat and wagon to the new “Indian Territory.”

The Tennessee Methamphetamine Task Force consists of members from state & local law enforcement agencies in every community in Tennessee, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee National Guard Counterdrug Division, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the District Attorneys of Tennessee, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the United States Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Tennessee. The Task Force has been funded by federal grants obtained with the assistance of the Bureau of Justice Assistance and COPS with bipartisan support of our Tennessee Congressional delegates. As a result of these efforts, since 1999 the United States Department of Justice has awarded in excess of $10 million to underwrite the training, investigation, prosecution and educational efforts of the Task Force. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation serves as the grantee agency for the funding of the Task Force and has been instrumental in supporting the Task Force’s training and operations throughout Tennessee.

Early morning pre-dawn fire totally engulfed a cabin on 8/12/08 located on Unicoi Lakes Road just off highway 68. No one was home at the time. The quick work of the Coker Creek Fire Dept. prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The fire victims (Spence family) had lived in the cabin for over 10 years. Ham radio is about knowledge and growth.  It is a hobby and service that truly offers “something for everyone.” Ham Radio embraces both the old and new.  While CW may no longer be a testing element, it is still a strong and favorite operating mode for many.  Tens of thousands of operators are embracing digital technologies, from RTTY to newer digital modes like PSK31 and Olivia.  Phone operation, probably the largest segment of the hobby, also has new frontiers to be explored with digitized voice, VOIP, and IRLP. And this is why Field Day – the largest annual on-the-air operating event – is so exciting.  It gives all – the old timer and the newcomer, the brass-pounder and the computer assisted operator – the chance to share and teach the broad range of modes and technologies we find in our hobby.

Field Day is truly the time in which we bring Ham radio to Main Street USA. By setting up in parking lots, malls, Emergency Operations Centers, parks and even at home, amateur operators learn skills that will allow them to better serve their communities.  Setting up in these public venues gives added public relations value – their friends and neighbors can see and experience the fun and public service capability that their “ham radio” neighbors bring to the community.

The soon to arrive influx of visitors brings a full plate of fun,  but at times deadly accidents Go here for some inspection guidelines. Rural parts of Monroe county have no building inspections. Cabins with upper floor sleeping areas can be  fire traps, and generally unsafe from the lack of building code guidelines.

Banner Ads Displaying- hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and candy bars will be for sale- does not address the obesity epidemic school kids are facing. See for yourself if a benevolent cause you are donating to, is involved in prevention of disease or merely community grandstanding and publicity! To see the real truth behind the statistics, and the actual lack of progress that has been made, I point the reader to this article to show just how we have been misled by the cancer industry in order to justify their continued existence and profits: It is evident that the modern medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States.

Adopting good Building Codes

Good building codes may ultimately. improve the community’s insurance rating. Few interior or exterior staircases would pass a UBC (uniform building code inspection)- especially in rural areas which have not as a rule attracted master builders. Many builders can build a house, but the staircase could not pass an inspection.

How to talk to Non-Tech Savvy clients

Everyone needs a website made, but not everyone can talk “tech” like we can. From the farm owner in Indiana to the brain surgeon in Malaysia, we quickly see that employers can come from all walks of life. Learning how to carry on a compelling conversation about web development is a paramountskill.

Group psychology and the analysis of the ego (1921).
Part II: Le Bon's description of the group mind.
Le Bon's description of the group mind is discussed. If the individuals in a group are combined into a unity, there must be something to unite them, and this bond might be precisely the thing that is characteristic of a group. Le Bon thinks that the particular acquirements of individuals become obliterated in a group, and that in this way their distinctiveness vanishes.

This classic social psychology experiment shows how little excuse people need to form into groups and start discriminating against others.
People's behaviour in groups is fascinating and frequently disturbing. As soon as humans are bunched together in groups we start to do odd things: copy other members of our group, favour members of own group over others, look for a leader to worship and fight other groups.

Black bears usually avoid humans. A young  girl's death here in 2006 shows how a family outing can turn to a tragic outcome.

Forest Ranger Dan Hicks said he was perplexed by the attack "because it goes against what I've been telling the public for a long time." Beware that unlike days of old- you are not allowed to take a firearm into the forest to protect yourself from bears, mountain lions, or human predators. Remember the James Kim tragedy Kim was known as the CNET gadget guru, however when found, he did not have or use a gps or a portable ham radio.
